We used to use transit all the time until the last fare increase. We have a car but rarely used it until now.

Since the most recent fare increase, the only difference between a monthly pass for one zone and our car insurance is $12 a month. The buses and skytrains are so cramped with riders that the last time I took public transit, I got sick with the flu from some guy that was sneezing and hacking all over everyone.

Between the bus strike in 2000 that lasted 5 months and the consistent fare increases, Vancouver has to get with the program.

Great read. Keep it up.

Well said!

Your list reminded me of an other option I'd forgotten about: carpooling. You know, if you don't own a car, and carpool with someone, offering them $5 a day for their services is actually CHEAPER than a 3-zone pass used every weekday. Now how about that? There seem to be too many risks for me associated with carpooling (because I don't own a car, nasty traffic, etc.), but that could be an option for some people to stick-it-to-the-man (even if it's not the right one).

Dave, don't forget about the Sunday pass advantages. They really ought to extend it to Saturdays... Actually to be honest in the 4.5 years I've had a pass, I've taken advantage of the Sunday thing umm... twice?

[...] Dave at Human Powered sums it up quite nicely, in addition to providing a number of statistics to back up his arguments. That’s a 40% increase at the farebox; the ever-helpful Bank of Canada tells me that inflation over this period has been less than 16%, meaning fares have gone up 2 and half times faster than everything else.
